Traveling to the Amalfi Coast can be tricky, but that’s all part of the adventure. The easiest way to get there depends on your budget and travel style. There are plenty of options, including direct routes and others that pass through Sorrento before reaching the different towns along the coast.

To make your journey smoother, I’ve broken down the best options to get from Naples to Amalfi Coast, so you can choose the one that works best for you. Whether you’re looking for a scenic ferry ride, a budget-friendly public transportation option like the SITA bus, or the most convenient choice—a private driver—there’s something for every traveler. No matter which route you take, the journey itself is part of the experience, with great views at every turn.

Amalfi Coast Travel Tips

Currency

Italy’s currency is the Euro (€). Be sure to have some cash on hand for small purchases or places that may not accept cards. While credit cards are widely accepted, especially in tourist areas, smaller shops, beach clubs, little towns, and some local restaurants may prefer cash.

Language

Italian is the official language, but many locals on the Amalfi Coast understand and speak basic English, especially in tourist areas. Learning a few Italian phrases like “Grazie” (thank you) and “Per favore” (please) goes a long way, it enhances your experience and shows appreciation to the locals.

Safety

I felt pretty safe, especially the smaller Amalfi Coast Towns. As with any place, it’s always important to be aware of your surroundings and take basic precautions, such as keeping an eye on your belongings in crowded areas, buses or train station.

Restaurants

Popular restaurants, especially in Positano and Amalfi, during high season book up quickly. Reserve a table in advance to avoid long waits—particularly for oceanfront dining spots and some of the great restaurants known for their fresh seafood and local specialties.

Home Base

Choosing the right home base on the Amalfi Coast makes exploring easier and more enjoyable. Staying in a central location, like Amalfi, Positano, or Sorrento, allows you to take a day trip to different towns without constantly changing accommodations. This is the best option for a relaxed and stress-free trip.

Breakfast

Many accommodations include breakfast, but it’s always a good idea to check in advance to see what’s offered. Italian breakfasts are often light, typically consisting of pastries, cold cuts, coffee, and fruit.

Best time to visit the Amalfi Coast

The Amalfi Coast is a year-round destination, but the experience can be different depending on when you go. With its stunning coastline and charming towns, each season offers something different. Some months are great for beach days, others for fewer crowds or a peaceful escape. Below, I’ve broken down what to expect in different places along the coast throughout the year.

APRIL, MAY, SEPTEMBER, OCTOBER (shoulder season)

Absolutely hands down the best time to visit! Late spring and early fall bring mild, pleasant weather—perfect for exploring without the intense summer heat. The crowds are also much smaller, so you can enjoy a more relaxed and peaceful experience. And best of all, everything is still open and easy to access.

JUNE-AUGUST (peak season)

Summer months are the busiest and hottest time of the year to visit. Prices for hotels and activities increase significantly, and reservations need to be made months in advance. The region becomes very crowded, which can make it harder to fully enjoy the sights and experiences.

NOVEMBER – MARCH (off-season)

The weather is cooler, and some hotels and restaurants close for the winter. However, it is much quieter, with fewer tourists and the opportunity to see the local lifestyle without the summer rush. This can be an ideal time for those who prefer a peaceful visit and don’t mind the cooler temperatures.

How many days on the Amalfi Coast

To embrace la dolce vita and take in the charm of the Amalfi Coast, spend two weeks in the area. This gives you time to explore the colorful towns—each with its own vibe, from Positano’s cliffs to Ravello’s views.

Two weeks is ideal for a slower pace, with time for day trips, amazing food, and soaking up the scenery. It’s the perfect place to unwind, recharge, and enjoy the laid-back beauty of the Italian coast.

Positano

Positano is one of my favorite places on the Amalfi Coast, known for its postcard-perfect views and home to the most iconic beach, Spiaggia Grande. With its colorful pastel houses cascading down the cliffs, charming boutiques, and delicious seafood, it’s a destination that feels like stepping into a dream. Don’t miss the stunning views from the beach, where the vibrant cliffs meet the turquoise sea. Be sure to wander through the narrow streets and relax by the water—Positano is a must-see spot on your Amalfi Coast journey.

One of the best ways to experience Positano is by strolling through its winding streets, where you can shop for locally made sandals, handmade ceramics, and unique Italian fashion. Afterward, take some time to relax at one of the many cafes, enjoying a refreshing drink while watching the world go by. If you’re a fan of fresh seafood, you’ll be in for a treat as the restaurants in Positano are known for their incredible seafood dishes and Mediterranean flavors.

Amalfi

The town of Amalfi is the heart of the Amalfi Coast, full of rich history and natural beauty. Make sure to wander its narrow, pretty streets and feel the incredible local culture.

The town’s Cathedral is a must-see. Its stunning façade and detailed interiors show off the region’s architecture. Be sure to visit the piazzas. You can enjoy a coffee or gelato while taking in the views.

Amalfi blends old-world charm with modern energy. It’s the perfect mix of history, culture, and relaxation.

Atrani

Atrani is a small, charming town just a 10-minute walk from Amalfi. It has narrow streets, stone archways, and charming piazzas, and while there, it feels like stepping back in time. The town has a quiet, local vibe that makes it a great escape from the busier spots along the coast.

To make it even more special, Atrani also offers stunning coastal views and peaceful beaches that are perfect for a relaxing swim. You can stroll along the beach promenade or stop at a cozy café to soak in the scenery. If you’re looking for a calm and laid-back spot on the Amalfi Coast, Atrani is a hidden gem.

Capri

The crown jewel of the Amalfi Coast, the island of Capri is a true paradise and an absolute must-see. Known for its dramatic cliffs, crystal-clear waters, and the enchanting Blue Grotto, Capri offers some of the most breathtaking scenery in Italy. While the island is famous for its upscale shopping, dining, and glamorous atmosphere, it’s also home to peaceful hiking trails and stunning viewpoints that provide panoramic views of the coast.

Even if you don’t stay on the island, getting to Capri is easy—you can take a scenic boat ride from your homebase, or opt for a day tour that lets you explore the island at a relaxed pace. Many boat trips offer the chance to visit the iconic Blue Grotto, a shimmering sea cave where the water glows an otherworldly blue. Whether you’re looking to shop, relax by the sea, or soak in the island’s natural beauty, Capri is a destination that will stay with you long after your visit.

Sorrento

Technically not part of the Amalfi Coast, Sorrento is still a must-visit destination for anyone exploring this region. This lively town is famous for its vibrant atmosphere, gorgeous views of the Bay of Naples, and its delicious lemons, which are used to make the iconic limoncello. As you stroll through the lively Piazza Tasso, you’ll find cute cafes, shops, and local vendors selling handcrafted goods and citrus products. The streets are filled with colorful buildings, creating a picturesque backdrop perfect for leisurely walks.

Sorrento is also home to a rich history, with several historic sites and landmarks to explore. Visit the Museo Correale di Terranova for a glimpse into the town’s past or head to the Cloister of San Francesco for a peaceful retreat. After exploring all the sights, head to a local restaurant to enjoy traditional dishes made from fresh, local ingredients. Dining with views of the sea adds to the charm of the experience. Sorrento may not be on the Amalfi Coast itself, but its close proximity makes it an ideal base for exploring the region.

Ravello

Nestled high above the Amalfi Coast, Ravello is a stunning town that offers some of the most breathtaking panoramic views of the coastline. Known for its peaceful atmosphere, Ravello is a perfect escape if you’re looking to experience the beauty of the coast from a more serene perspective. The town is famous for its beautiful gardens, which provide the perfect setting to enjoy the stunning scenery.

A must-visit in Ravello are the Villa Rufolo and Villa Cimbrone, two historic villas that feature gorgeous gardens and terraces with sweeping views of the sea and mountains, which we will go in more detail later!

Aside from the villas, Ravello has a quaint town center filled with narrow roads and cute shops, perfect for a leisurely stroll. You can enjoy a quiet meal at one of the local restaurants with fresh seafood and Italian specialties while taking in the views. Ravello is a peaceful gem on the Amalfi Coast, with a relaxed elegance and stunning vistas that you won’t forget.

Praiano

Praiano is a quiet town with stunning sunsets and crystal-clear waters. It’s a good option if you want to escape the crowds and avoid the higher prices of more popular spots on the Amalfi Coast. You can relax on beautiful beaches like Marina di Praia, or explore hidden coves that offer a peaceful atmosphere. The town is also known for its laid-back vibe, making it a perfect place to unwind.

If you’re up for a bit of adventure, take a walk along the Path of the Gods, a scenic trail that offers breathtaking views of the coast. Afterward, you can enjoy a meal at one of the local restaurants, known for their fresh seafood and regional dishes. Praiano gives you the chance to experience the beauty of the Amalfi Coast without the hustle and bustle, and it’s a more affordable option compared to other.

Things to do on the Amalfi Coast

Boat day trip to Capri

A boat trip to the Island of Capri is an absolute must when visiting the Amalfi Coast. It’s one of the most unforgettable experiences. The trip offers breathtaking views of the coastline and the island’s stunning natural beauty.

For our trip, we chose a private boat tour. This gave us the freedom to create our own itinerary and explore at our own pace. This option is great if you prefer a more personalized experience. You can stop wherever catches your eye and tailor the tour to your interests.

One of the highlights was visiting unique caves, including the world-renowned Blue Grotto (Grotta Azzurra). The deep blue waters inside the cave glow with an ethereal light. It makes for an experience like no other.

If you go during peak season, be prepared to wait up to two hours. We went during shoulder season and had no wait. We also stopped at a few picturesque spots along the coast. The crystal-clear waters there were perfect for a swim.

These secluded locations are often only accessible by boat. This adds to the charm of the experience.

The private boat tour, also allows you to enjoy the island’s coastline from the water, taking in the dramatic cliffs and lush landscapes that make Capri so iconic. Along the way, we passed by natural wonders such as the Faraglioni Rocks, towering dramatically out of the water—where we paused to take in the views and open a complimentary bottle of champagne provided by the boat company. You will stop for a bit to admire the scenery and snap photos in this magical setting.

If you’re looking for a way to escape the crowds and experience Capri in a more intimate, leisurely way, a boat day trip is definitely the best option. You’ll get to see the island from an entirely new perspective, soak up the sun, swim in crystal-clear waters, and enjoy the tranquility of the sea. Whether you’re visiting for the day or want to spend a few hours exploring, this is one adventure you won’t want to miss.

Vintage car tour

This is a truly an unforgettable and a bucket list experience—a vintage car tour! This is such a unique way to explore Positano, combining the charm of a classic car with stunning views of the Amalfi Coast. Cruising through the winding streets in a vintage car feels like stepping into a dream. During the morning, the town is sill quiet and peaceful, so you’ll get to see the vibrant colors of the town, and coastal scenery with no crowds, make it a picture-perfect start to your day.

There are options where you can drive yourself or have a driver, depending on what you prefer. We chose to have a driver since the cars are stick shift, the roads are narrow, and Positano is hilly—and it was the best choice! Our driver was amazing, taking us to incredible spots, snapping photos, and even capturing some videos.

Make sure to stop by the famous cliffside fruit stand, (address and google coordinates below) located just south of Positano before Praiano. It’s the most picturesque spot with breathtaking views, and the local vendor there is hilarious. He grabbed our phone, directed us into fun poses, and made sure we left with perfect pictures. 🍋Don’t forget to support for this local vendor by purchasing some fruit while taking photos!

Villa Cimbrone

A visit to Villa Cimbrone in Ravello is like stepping into a fairytale. This historic villa is famous for its enchanting gardens, intricate sculptures, and breathtaking panoramic views of the Amalfi Coast. Strolling through its lush pathways, you’ll come across centuries-old architecture, romantic archways, and hidden corners that make it one of the most magical places in the region.

The highlight of Villa Cimbrone is the Terrace of Infinity, a stunning balcony lined with marble busts that seem to float above the sea. The views from here are absolutely unforgettable, with the endless blue of the sky and ocean stretching as far as the eye can see. It’s no wonder this spot has inspired poets, artists, and travelers for centuries.

Villa Rufolo

Located in the heart of Ravello, Villa Rufolo is a stunning historic estate with stunning views, elegant gardens, and a glimpse into the Amalfi Coast’s rich past. Dating back to the 13th century, this villa was once home to one of the wealthiest families in the region and still carries an air of grandeur and romance.

One of the highlights of Villa Rufolo is its beautiful terraced gardens, filled with vibrant flowers, towering cypress trees, and pathways leading to panoramic viewpoints overlooking the coastline. Beyond the gardens, you can explore the historic towers, Moorish-style architecture, and ancient courtyards, each with its own unique charm. The villa also serves as a venue for the Ravello Festival, a world-renowned classical music event where performances take place against the backdrop of the stunning coastal scenery.

Cooking class

Outdoor terrace where you eat what you made

What’s more iconic than taking a cooking class in Italy?! It’s such a fun and engaging activity, perfect for immersing yourself in Italian culture. We learned to make traditional dishes using fresh, local ingredients, guided by an experienced chef who shared family recipes and cooking secrets. We made fluffy homemade gnocchi, rich and flavorful eggplant parmigiana, and the classic Italian dessert—tiramisu. Every step was hands-on, from rolling out the dough to layering the perfect bite. After all the hard work, we sat down to enjoy our delicious meal, paired with local wine, while soaking in breathtaking views.

It was such a memorable experience—delicious food, great company, and a true taste of la dolce vita. Whether you’re in Positano or Sorrento, a cooking class is a must! Here are some options: Positano Cooking Class or Sorrento Cooking Class.

Amalfi Cathedral (Duomo di Amalfi)

Visiting this cathedral is a must! Standing in the heart of Amalfi, Duomo di Amalfi is one of the most breathtaking landmarks on the coast. Its striking facade, with intricate gold and mosaic details, immediately catches your eye as you climb the grand staircase leading to its entrance. Inside, you’ll find stunning medieval and Baroque architecture, elaborate frescoes, and a richly decorated ceiling. The cathedral also houses the Cloister of Paradise (Chiostro del Paradiso), a peaceful courtyard with elegant white columns and lush greenery, perfect for taking in the beauty of the surroundings.

Make sure to visit the crypt of Saint Andrew, where the relics of the apostle are kept. The history and artistry throughout the cathedral make it a must-see for anyone exploring the town of Amalfi. Whether you’re admiring its grandeur from the outside or wandering through its halls, it’s a place that truly showcases the cultural and religious heritage of the region.

Cloister of Paradise (Chiostro del Paradiso)

Tucked beside the Amalfi Cathedral, the Cloister of Paradise (Chiostro del Paradiso) is a hidden gem in the town of Amalfi. Built in the 13th century, this peaceful cloister was originally a burial site for noble families. Today, it’s a quiet escape from the bustling streets of Amalfi, with elegant white marble columns, Moorish-style arches, and lush greenery creating a serene atmosphere.

As you step inside, you’ll notice the beautiful courtyard, surrounded by delicate archways that let in soft light, adding to the tranquil setting. The cloister also features well-preserved medieval frescoes and remnants of ancient Roman and Byzantine influences. It’s the perfect spot to pause, soak in the history, and admire the stunning blend of architectural styles.

Hike the path of the Gods

One of the most breathtaking hikes in Italy, the Path of the Gods (Sentiero degli Dei) offers unforgettable views of the Amalfi Coast from high above the cliffs. This scenic trail winds through rugged landscapes, terraced vineyards, and charming hillside villages, with sweeping panoramas of the Mediterranean Sea stretching out below.

The hike begins in Bomerano, a small village in Agerola, and takes you along a well-marked trail with some of the most stunning coastal views in the region. Along the way, you’ll pass ancient stone pathways, lush greenery, and cliffs, making it feel like you’ve stepped into a postcard. The trail ends in the town of Nocelle, where you can either continue down to Positano (via a long staircase of over 1,500 steps) or catch a bus to town.

While the hike is moderately challenging, it’s suitable for most travelers with a decent fitness level. Be sure to wear sturdy shoes, bring water, and start early in the morning to avoid the midday sun. If you’re looking for a unique way to experience the Amalfi Coast, hiking the Path of the Gods is truly an unforgettable adventure!

Limoncello tasting

No visit to Sorrento is complete without experiencing a Limoncello tasting, and there’s no better place than the famous Limonoro Fabbrica. This family-run factory is known for producing some of the best Limoncello in the region, using traditional methods passed down for generations.

As soon as you step inside, you’ll be greeted by the refreshing aroma of fresh lemons, as the shop is filled with bottles of handcrafted Limoncello, lemon-infused treats, and artisanal souvenirs. You’ll get to sample this iconic Sorrentine liqueur, made from locally grown lemons known for their intense fragrance and flavor. The tasting includes not just the classic Limoncello, but also creamy variations, citrus-infused spirits, and sweet lemon-based liqueurs.

Aside from Limoncello, Limonoro also has a ton of delicious selection of desserts, such as lemon chocolates, cookies, and limoncello-infused cakes, all of which make perfect souvenirs or gifts.

Limoncello tasting in Sorrento is a fun, flavorful, and authentic experience, giving you a true taste of the Amalfi Coast’s most famous drink!
